The first batch of football games has now finally arrived onto the next generation consoles. With the success of FIFA 08, scoring highly in terms of presentation, online features and gameplay – Pro evolution soccer has a lot to live up to.
Where Pro evolution has excelled in the past has been in the gameplay. Passing the ball around the pitch has always been a joy and in this edition passing now seems more fluid and shooting has improved. Computer AI has also been tweaked as goalkeepers behave a lot more natural. Midfielders and wingers will get up to support you and attacking players will create realistic movement which has always been a flaw in previous games in the series. New skills and tricks have been added into the game and players feel a lot lighter meaning they can turn quicker to create and exploit space.
With all these improvements, there are still a few negatives. The overall package is still very much like its predecessor, Pro evolution 6. The Master League is still the same which is a huge disappointment as this was meant to be updated and improved and while the graphics have been updated they are still not up to ‘next gen’ standards. The framerate can drop dramatically on replays and wide camera angles and the commentary will get repeatative and annoying rather quickly. Online gameplay is very laggy and hopefully will be improved when/ if Konami release an update.
Overall, Pro evolution still remains an essential purchase for football fans. The game seems a little rushed but the focus has been put into the gameplay and it shows. Splitting defences apart with fluid passing is an absolute joy. The pace has been notched up which results in more fluid matches with more goals and created chances. The game is easy for beginners to pick up and for veterans to hone their skills further.
